SCTSB Reef Ball School Program

At LAUT Brunei, we are dedicated to advancing marine conservation efforts and protecting Brunei’s precious marine ecosystems. We are proud to have partnered with SC Tubular Solutions (B) Sdn Bhd (SCTSB), a committed corporate sponsor, to launch the SCTSB Reef Ball School Program – a groundbreaking initiative designed to raise awareness and foster action in reef rehabilitation, coral propagation, and fisheries enhancement.

About the SCTSB Reef Ball School Program

The SCTSB Reef Ball School Program is an educational initiative focused on providing hands-on experience to local youth while promoting marine conservation. This collaborative program, supported by SCTSB, is aimed at deploying 100 reef balls, each weighing 20 kg and planted with 6 corals, to regenerate coral ecosystems around Brunei.

Through the program, we are actively engaging local schools, communities, and organizations to raise awareness about the importance of marine conservation and to take direct action in rehabilitating coral reefs.

Our Key Achievements

116 certified Youth Reef Ball Fabricators and Discoverers trained through our interactive Reef Ball Training Program.
60 reef balls fabricated by the youth participants and SCTSB Staffs as part of their hands-on experience.
100 reef balls deployed to promote coral regeneration and enhance marine biodiversity.
8 school talks were delivered, educating over 1,650 local students about the significance of marine and coral conservation.
5 SCTSB staff members are now certified RAID Open Water divers and Reef Guru Coral divers.
21 SCTSB staff members are now certified Reef Ball Fabricators and Discoverers.

Each reef ball serves as an artificial reef structure designed to provide a safe and stable environment for coral and marine life. The corals planted on each reef ball will grow and contribute to healthier coral ecosystems, enhancing the local marine environment and supporting fisheries enhancement.

Engaging Local Youth in Conservation

One of the primary goals of the SCTSB Reef Ball School Program is to engage Brunei’s youth, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to actively participate in marine conservation. To date, over 116 students have completed the Reef Ball Fabrication, Discovery, and Gardener Express programs, with valuable support from SCTSB volunteers who joined to teach and guide the youth throughout their training.

The program has reached 1766 youths across Brunei, inspiring the next generation to understand the significance of marine ecosystems and how they can contribute to their protection. Through hands-on activities and educational presentations, we’ve made a lasting impact on young people’s views about sustainability and conservation.

Expanding Our Reach

In addition to engaging local youth, the SCTSB Reef Ball School Program has also expanded its reach to include various community groups and organizations, helping to foster a wider network of marine conservation advocates. Our school talks, workshops, and training sessions continue to spread the message of marine conservation to new audiences, inspiring more people to take action and support sustainable initiatives.

Looking Ahead: Sustainable Solutions for the Future

The SCTSB Reef Ball School Program is just the beginning. LAUT Brunei, in collaboration with SCTSB, is committed to scaling up these efforts, reaching more schools, engaging more youth, and continuing to restore and protect Brunei’s marine ecosystems. The future of our oceans depends on the actions we take today—through education, awareness, and hands-on action.
